May News

Executive News
Here we are coming into our last month of the quilting year ... already. Wow, that sure zipped by.
A couple of things are on board for us this month. First is our monthly business meeting at 9:30 am sharp on Tuesday May 8. This meeting is our annual AGM and while it'll be a short meeting (an hour) we'll be looking to fill volunteer positions for next year. Step up! Especially if you're a new member this year, don't be afraid, nobody bites! Second is our wind-up on our in-Guild day, Tuesday May 22. Sally has plans for us and will announce them at the business meeting. And don't forget there are two work days for the raffle quilt this month - the 15th and 22nd as per Diane's messages/blog post.
Hope to see you there, there and there!

Raffle Quilt Update

In May the guild will be working on next year's raffle quilt.  Here are the dates;
May 15 at 9:am Part one; the Maple Leaf block
May 22 - Part Two the Log Cabin portion of the block.  Since this is also the AGM and windup I'm not too sure at what point we will work on the block.
We hope everyone can make 2 - 3 blocks.
Definitely NO pastels, funky, art deco or psychedelics for either the Maple Leaf or Log Cabin fabrics.
For the maple leaf portion; a 12" square of  a homespun fabic  to make the leaf and stem.  Ideal colours are greens, reds, oranges, browns and rusts.  The leaves should be all one colour of fabric - not an assortment as in the photo.
The guild will supply the background fabric and you'll receive printed directions on the 15th May as well as the background.
For the log cabin portion of the block we want  2 1/2" wide strips of assorted fabrics.  Ideal colours are greens, tans, reds, oranges, golds, blues, browns and rusts.  Homespun style.  Plaids in those colours are OK but soft style.  The blues will add a punch but nothing too wild.  The tans should not be beige  but a darker shade.

Any questions contact Lesley, Gayle, Laura Jean or myself.

April News

Executive News

So much for March! We've had a taste of spring and wouldn't it be lovely if it stuck around? More sunshine is always welcome.
April has some fun things coming up for the Guild and I hope you'll all take part as much as you can. The first two Tuesdays of the month (the 3rd and 10th) are open days - bring whatever you want to work on and your lunch, and enjoy a day out among quilty friends.
Please take note that April 10 would normally be our business meeting at 7 pm, but we have to move it for lack of someone to chair it - me, Sally our vice-president and Rae our past president are all unavailable. Therefore, at the March meeting, the membership decided to hold April's meeting on Tuesday April 17 at 9:30 am. Items will include a vote to permanently move business meetings to daytime (second Tuesday of the month), year-end wind-up, a request for a donation to the Legion's pipe band, raffle quilt update, quilt show update, reminders about the WKQC Saturday April 21, and a short discussion around holding in-guilds through the summer. Please let me know if you have anything else for the agenda. Your executive would like to keep the meeting down to about an hour because .....
..... immediately after the meeting we'll start stuffing goodie bags and doing other prep for the WKQC under Rae's guidance. Please remember to bring your big/tall vases, boxes for transporting stuff, etc., as discussed at March's meeting. And you can also hand in your fat quarters and star blocks, as well as any patterns or other items you're donating for door prizes (donations get you a free admission ticket!). If you volunteered to bake muffins or loaves please don't bring them on Tuesday - bring them with you to the conference. Please direct any questions you have about the conference to Rae or Cathy, the organizers.
April's in-guild on Tuesday the 24th is a "no host, no teacher" event. It's Bag, Purse and Tote Day. Bring a pattern of your choice and whatever you need to make your item and we'll all give each other help with any techniques as needed. There are free patterns galore on the internet if you don't wish to buy a pattern, or have a look through the Guild library, the public library's quilt books, etc. Magazines are a great source for bag patterns too. I'm just finishing up my first ever bag and it was a lot of fun to make!
Rae, Cathy, Sally and I, along with Debra McCracken from Flamingo Quiltworx, are off to the Lutherhaven quilting retreat this month, and Irene and Rhonda P are attending the spring Chewelah retreat. I hope we all come back inspired with lots of projects to show 'n tell about and maybe even some new ideas to share.
Happy quilting!

March News

Executive News
Hi everyone
It seems like 2012 is zooming by. March already! Which month is supposed to go out like and lamb and which one come in like a lion? Or is it vice versa? It would be wonderful if Mother Nature would bring spring now.
There's not a lot going on Guild-wise during March. That will make a nice bit of rest before the West Kootenay Quilt Conference in April.
March 6th is Liz's hand quilting class starting at 9 am. The class is open to everyone. See the blog under "Beginner Quilt Lessons" for what to bring.
March 13th is our monthly business meeting at 7 pm. Attendance has been low the past few months so please try to be there. So far the agenda is light. The usual reports plus an update on the WKQC, first thoughts on the raffle quilt (Lesley) and quilt show (Kim and Rhonda P) from our new chairpeople, year-end windup ... that kind of thing. Let me know if you'd like anything discussed at the meeting.
March 27th is the monthly in-guild starting at 9 am. Irene has recruited Lucille to teach something but won't spill the beans yet on what it is!
Daytimes on March 13, 20 and 27 are wide open at this point in time. Bring a project, your lunch and enjoy a day out. It's been quite a while since we've seen some of you and we miss you.

February News

So there goes January ... it's a blur. It's been quite a month and here we are already moving into February. The next few months will be busy ones!
Tuesday, January 31 from 9 am to noon - I'm showing/teaching curved piecing - open to everyone. Don't forget a couple of pieces of contrasting fabrics or some scraps about 8 x 8 inches, as well as some scissors that will cut thin plastic and a fine marking pen (for tracing templates). You'll also need your usual equipment. All else supplied. After the curved piecing session, we're having a potluck lunch so bring along something to share and your plates/cutlery if you don't want to use disposables. After lunch you're on your own to work on whatever you like.
Tuesday, February 7  at 9 am - Irene will be showing/teaching Blocks Made Simply, three blocks you can use in whatever project you like - open to everyone. Bring your fabrics and equipment.
Tuesday, February 14 - Treasure Box making day for the West Kootenay Quilt Conference - for everyone - bring your equipment, all materials supplied. These are really easy and quick to make and we should be able to get them all done in one sitting starting at 9 am. Please no other projects this day as we're devoting the space and time to the little boxes. This is also business meeting evening at 7 pm sharp. If you have anything for the agenda please contact me at 250-442-8493 or email me.
Tuesday, February 21 - An open day! Bring a project and lunch, spend the day or just drop in to see what your fellow quilters are up to. We haven't seen much of some of you, would love it if you came along.
Tuesday, February 28 - In-Guild at 9 am. Irene is teaching Trip Around The World for everyone. If you don't already have your fabric requirements or need help with your fabric, please call or see Irene before the in-guild.
Shirley Wold has asked if Guild members could bind some quilts for her since she can't do them herself at this time. Cathy will have more information about that soon to pass on to you.
The West Kootenay Quilt Conference isn't far away so Rae and Cathy will soon be asking for our help with a few things. Please do help out! It isn't "The Rae and Cathy Show" - our Guild is hosting this event with Rae and Cathy as the event committee, so we're all in on it. It'll be a fun day and a great opportunity to meet people from other Guilds, see what they're doing, show off our own stuff, shop with the vendors ... and the more people get involved, the better it will be.
A reminder that any time we get together is show and tell day, no need to wait for a meeting! Bring anything you'd like to show anytime, we'd all love to see it.
Kim Boyd needs a picture-taker/historian helper as Bonnie P has quit the post. It's not a big job - take pictures, print them, put them in an album, occasionally send something to the newspaper, etc. Contact Kim if you can give her a hand. Even two helpers would be great as we seem to be missing a photographer at many of our get-togethers lately! Camera supplied, printing and album costs paid.
We still need a Quilt Show convener and a Raffle Quilt Committee chairperson. Nobody at the January business meeting volunteered. I would like to point out that as members, you voted to have a Quilt Show and Raffle Quilt again so it shouldn't come as any surprise that someone needs to take these on. It's time these two jobs went outside the small group of members who have always done them in the past, sometimes because nobody else would. There are experienced people behind you if you take one of these two jobs on, plus a book of "helps". You would not be put out to sea and cast adrift on uncharted waters. A few members have volunteered to be on the committees already so you won't be working alone, either. Come on, be brave .... we've done it, you can too! You'll be amazed how easily it all comes together and how much help you'll have. All you need is a love of quilts, the rest happens as you go.

January News

Executive News
Welcome to 2012! I hope you've all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year holiday season.
Did you make any New Year's resolutions? I was going to resolve to get all my UFOs caught up by the end of June ... until my daughter and I went quilt shop hopping in Edmonton and added 5 more projects to my list. Quilters' joy - always something new and different out there!
Our first business meeting of 2012 is Tuesday, January 10 at 7 p.m. Bring paper and pencil for note taking, and be prepared to volunteer yourself up to help out with something. We'll be looking for fundraisers, quilt show organizers and raffle quilt ladies (committee heads as well as members). And don't forget your Show And Tells!
2012's first in-Guild is Diane's string quilt on Tuesday January 24 at 9 a.m. See Diane on Tuesdays for your copy of the pattern if you want to take part.
I don't have an update for you on the Dancing With Thread books since I'm away from home until January 4. I'll check on it when I get home for everyone.
Happy quilting

CABA's Quilting Cottage

CABA'S Quilting Cottage is starting off the 2012 quilting year with a class by Liz Faminoff on February 24, 25 and 26th titled "TURK CAP LILIES".  This sparkling design will brighten any day!  The class size will be limited to 8 spots so hurry in to sign up and not be disappointed.
We are very excited in having Anne Rayner-Gould agreeing to do an instructional class for 3 days in March.  Anne will be offering guidance in learning how colours work together.  This class will be doubly useful because it will show us how we can make use of fabrics from our stashes!  Don't miss this one!  We'll be confirming the dates in March soon.
